Surface preparation – swimming pool case study

Before blasting, where the existing coating was failing…

Ever wondered how to remove an existing coating from a swimming pool?

This is one of our latest projects – the removal of surface coatings from a swimming pool.

The coating on this swimming pool had started to fail, and water was getting behind the top coat. Grit Blasting UK removed all of the coatings, ensuring a clean substrate ready for re-coating.

The pools side and flooring was blasted to remove all of the existing coating.

After blasting….ready for re-coating

From home renovation projects like brickwork fireplaces and chimney breasts to blast cleaning industrial units, we offer a comprehensive service for external and internal walls, ceilings, and complete buildings.

We ensure that the right media and the right amount of pressure is applied when we are blasting, giving you confidence in the care we take with your materials when working on any surface preparation project.

Blast cleaning does not damage your original brickwork. We can remove old layers of paint and contamination to restore brick work to its original condition, preparing the surface for a new coat or restoring it to its original look.

Our recent case study – concrete floor preparation

We have just completed a concrete floor preparation project which was in a hospital basement. We were asked to remove the contaminants which included paint and resin from the floor of what was once a staff room in the hospital.

Concrete floor preparation – halfway through

By using the latest diamond grinding technology, we were able to remove the stubborn top surface of the concrete, leaving the substrate fully prepared for its new coating.

Concrete floor after diamond grinding – a perfect substrate

Concrete floor preparation is a specialist contractor project. Requiring heavy equipment, knowledge of the work and the right environment, the surface is not only prepared but all dust and particles must be removed from the site.

Grit Blasting UK offers a nationwide concrete floor preparation service. We are able to remove all surface contaminants including resins, vinyl tiles, glues, paint and other substances.

In addition to our preparation work, we work in partnership with Promain UK to supply, prepare and coat concrete surfaces with new applications.

Concrete floor preparation using specialist contractors

We get approached every day from Quantity Surveyors and building contractors who need to sub-contract their concrete floor preparation. Whether its preparing a concrete floor for painting, or just prepping the concrete surface, having the right equipment, and the right skills is fundamental.

If you are about to ask sub-contractors to quote for similar work, here’s a few things to consider.

Equipment. Larger scale projects need to be cost effective, so size of equipment in relation to square footage of the concrete flooring project is key. Contractors using smaller equipment – normally used for small to medium size projects will inevitably cost more in the long run in time taken.

Experience. From costing the project, through to the final surface finish, contractor experience will reduce the risk considerably on bigger or higher contract values. Knowledge of flooring surface contaminants, costing variations, potential ‘blind spots’ on the project, new surface paint applications and project dependencies are all key.

Quality. “You get what you pay for” is a well used adage. In preparing concrete floors for industrial or commercial use, longevity in surface prepping and coatings is vital.

Having quality equipment with skilled contactors means producing a high quality finish. Edging of concrete floors for example is important – and many machines and sub-contractors are not able to go right to the flooring edge, due to the technology used. Investment in floor grinding and grit blasting equipment is expensive, and certainly not cost effective for a one-off job, so finding a high quality specialist contractor, with a known reputation is key. Their understanding of the right equipment to use for the surface / substrate is crucial to a successful job.

Grit Blasting UKexperienced specialist floor preparation

At Grit Blasting UK we have the latest equipment to undertake medium and large scale projects. Warehouses, out of town premises, aircraft hangers, factories to name just a few. This includes specialist flooring preparation work in historic buildings, national colleges, car manufacturing factories and national heritage properties.

Grit Blasting uses the very latest technology – including diamond floor grinding.

This is used to expose the aggregate, creating a roughened surface on the concrete on which further concrete may be poured or protective coatings or wear courses applied. The surface prepared is dust free, chemically clean and free from micro cracks which can cause premature bond failure. Our video shows the process.

Diamond Grinding is used to remove waterproof membranes, latex, adhesives etc. It is ideal for removing imperfections in the concrete surface, particularly on larger scale projects.

Innovatech diamond grinding technology

We also offer an end-to-end service including paint or surface treatment or coating application as well as surface preparation. In conjunction with our suppliers, we are able to cost-effectively source paint and specialist floor covering, and apply using the right techniques to high standard finishes.

What we do – its a lot!

We are asked occasionally what we do as a company. Its really hard to categorize, as Grit Blasting is just one of many surface preparation services we do for clients. As we have expanded, we have developed new skills and new technologies.

But in short, we blast clean anything from small home renovation items through to wind turbines, warehouses and steel bridges – and anything in between!

Here for example is a building frame that we recently grit blasted, then using an airless sprayer, we covered it in primer, supplied by Promain Paints Ltd. So in this case we have used our blast cleaning skills, along with out paint spray capabilities to offer our client a one-stop shop service in surface preparation.

Blast clean and spraying from Grit Blasting UK

In the photo above you can see the new shiny paint on a dumper. In this case, we have a number of contracts with local equipment manufacturers and suppliers. We help them blast clean their equipment, ready for re-spraying. Examples include aboricultural and agricultural equipment.

We have two blasting yards – one in Andover and one in Devizes. We also travel anywhere in the UK to undertake surface preparation work. One of our popular mobile services is floor preparation, where we have specialist concrete grinding expertise and equipment to remove stubborn contaminants, and the skills to apply new coatings to the freshly prepared surface.

We are the UK’s leading surface preparation company, offering high value blast cleaning, paint spraying and powder coating facilities.

Concrete floor shot blasting and preparation

See the difference….

Floor preparation is an efficient and environmentally acceptable dust free method of preparing concrete surfaces. Grit Blasting UK uses it expertise and the latest in diamond floor grinding technology to provide a clean, professional finish ready for the application of surface treatments such as paint. Some still refer to this as shot blasting, but in reality it is diamond grinding!

Grit Blasting is undertaking more and more floor preparation projects for contractors. The demand for “out of town” warehouses, shopping centres, factories and other storage space is giving rise to the need for preparation of much bigger floor spaces, and required in a shorter time frame because of the tight deadlines on the overall building and construction jobs where cost control is critical.

Investing in the latest technology is key to reducing the timescales on bigger jobs such as floor preparation. We maintain a fleet of diamond floor grinders applicable for any size of project, and the latest staff training ensures an efficient and highly skilled team familiar with the latest techniques. We have recently purchased a new lorry to help transport all of our equipment across UK sites.

An understanding of the science behind the materials, the paint applications as well and the safety needs of the work and the after-care of the materials is also a key requisite of our work.

We undertake any size of floor preparation work and are experts in our field with over 20 years’ experience.

Larger construction and engineering companies now rely on us UK as a preferred sub-contractor because of our reliability and experience. This is particularly the case in floor preparation.

Shotblasting, gritblasting or sandblasting?

One of the biggest questions we get asked is ‘whats the difference between shotblasting and sandblasting’ or ‘what is gritblasting’?

We’ll try and answer that here for you! Shotblasting tends to be an older phrase, and here in Andover, and at our Devizes blasting premises we are often fielding these questions.

The two terms seem similar but sandblasting and shot blasting are different processes used in blast cleaning trade.

Shotblasting is often a generic term used to describe sandblasting or gritblasting. The difference however is the application technique used in cleaning and preparation.

The sandblasting or gritblasting process uses compressed air to blast abrasive media like sand against the product being cleaned. Shotblasting uses force from a mechanical device to propel ‘shot’ metal media to clean the surface.

Sandblasting is a less invasive abrasion process. Sandblasting or gritblasting is less forceful than shot blasting. With light pressure and soft media materials like organics or glass, very sensitive surfaces can be treated with little risk of any damage.

In blast cleaning we rarely use sand now. There is far safer and environmentally friendly media. These include those manufactured from minerals, metals, glass, plastics and organics like corn cobs and walnut shells.

Powder coating – the facts

In March we announced the installation of our Powder Coating facility at our Andover premises. Here’s a few facts on the process, which we are using everyday in providing our contract clients with high quality powder coating finishes.

Latest powder coating technology

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is used for metals, aluminium, household white goods, and a whole quantity of agricultural, arboricultural and farming equipement – to name just a few things.

The powder coating is firstly applied as a dry powder, which means it doesn’t need a solvent to bind it. The powder is then cured under heat which forms a skin. Normally the powder is a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer. The finish that is produced is rock hard – tougher than a conventional paint coating.

Because the powder coating does not have a liquid form, it can produce thicker coatings without running or dripping, and the end result is a smooth and flawless finish. Several powder colours can even be applied before curing.

High quality powder coating finish

Powder coatings:

  • Contain no solvents, and release very little volatile organic compounds
  • Can produce thicker coatings
  • Curing time is significantly faster than liquid application
